Vale Tom Kefecek a.k.a Capt Scarlett - CatintheHat - 18-01-2022 04:08 PM

Some sad news to share guys, Tomi Kefecek better known as Capt Scarlett, died last Wednesday (Jan 12, 2022) after a short battle with an aggressive form of kidney cancer.

Tomi, aged 58, was diagnosed with the terminal illness last July with the hideous disease sending him to hospital on Christmas day.

He didn’t leave hospital and spent his final hours with wife Gabby by his side.

A memorial service will be held for Tomi at Fort Scratchley in Newcastle next Thursday evening.

Capt Scarlett was a regular member of the Aussie / NZ gaming community mostly playing WW2 era games, his favourite being the Red Orchestra series.

A colourful character known for his regular vocal encouragement of players in game, Scarlett was a polarising to many in the community but those that took the time to know the guy, quickly saw the different side to the man.

Well-read and with a knowledge of WW2 beyond the avid enthusiast, Scarlett could talk for hours about his passions. He was always up for a chat, and we spent many an hour talking about the machines of war or chatting through whatever he was up to in life at the time.

I also got to know Scarlett in the real world when he helped my business for a brief period around 2013. He would travel down to Sydney from Newcastle for a few days of work, staying at my place -always falling asleep in front of the TV. He and Gabby were also guests at our place in Sydney.

Business pressures, Covid-19 and less gaming in general did see me lose touch with Tomi recently. Something I regret.

Capt Scarlett, I hope you made it into the cap zone mate.

Rest in peace.

Matt Baxter
Cat in the Hat.

Gabby has asked if anyone has videos or content involving Tomi to post below. There were a bunch of troll videos from 2016 which Tomi thought were classic. I will try to find them and post below.

I haven't been active for a very long time and this is genuinely heavy news to hear. I'm at an absolute loss of words...

Sad news. He had me cracking up many times. The phrase "get in the cap" will forever remind me of Scarlet.

Thank you Cat for letting us know and my condolences for his family and friends. I've had many fond memories of Cpt Scarlett and the shenanigans he'd carry on for better and for worse but boy you knew you were in for a fun game with his presence about. I don't think there was ever a time I hadn't laughed with him screaming at us all to get on the cap or do your job and be cannon fodder.

Cat, what is the possibility of having the RO2 server up on Sunday this week or next for an organised fight night as a tribute to the man?

It's hard to believe such a icon of the Aus gaming community is gone, really sad to hear I think we are all gonna miss scarlet in one way or another. I'll see if I still have some old clips of him

Very sorry to hear the news. RO wouldn't have been the same without him. Thanks for letting us know.
